Your Insurance Policy

An insurance policy is an important agreement between you and the company that provides it.  This is because insurance policies basically help negate the need for cash in given situations.  For instance, having a health insurance will make the hospitalization of the policy holder technically free.  This means that he will not have to put up cash just to be admitted to the hospital.  However, this is not really free since you pay for your health insurance policy even before you make use of it.
In the case of cosmetic surgery, there are gray areas when it comes to insurance policies.  There are basically two categories of plastic surgery, the cosmetic and the reconstructive surgeries.  The former is done to give the parts of the body a new shape for the purpose of improved appearance.  The latter is done to improve the bodily functions of body parts that have defects, trauma, abnormalities and malformations.  Health insurance policies cover reconstructive surgeries.  However, cosmetic surgeries are generally not covered by the insurance since it is basically elective and is not medically necessary, with some exceptions.
Your insurance policy, as mentioned, is the agreement between you and your provider.  On the other hand, service and fee agreement is an agreement between you and your cosmetic surgeon.  If you will undergo a plastic surgery procedure, you are responsible to your surgeon to pay for the operation.  Your policy may cover part or all of your fees depending on the terms of contract you have with the insurance company as well as the reason for the cosmetic surgery.
Health insurance policies are supposed to cover health related cosmetic surgeries.  If this is the case with you, then you will need the surgeon’s certification and other similar proof to make sure you are able to collect from the insurance.  If the insurance finds that the primary reason for undergoing such a procedure is to relieve health problems, then it is covered by your policy.
Since it is more likely that you already have an existing health insurance even before you decide on getting a cosmetic surgery, it would be best that you understand what is included in your policy first and find out if you can use it for your plastic surgery.  There are limited coverage and those that may provide cosmetic surgery coverage.  To be sure, read the insurance manual carefully and know how you can maximize your insurance’s use.
